Why Your Lock Screen Matters

Think of your lock screen as the front door to everything digital in your life. Most people set it up once and never think about it again. Whether it stops a thief in their tracks or opens a window to your entire digital life depends entirely on how it is configured.

Behind that screen sits:

  • Your banking and payment apps
  • Your emails and messages
  • Your photos and documents
  • The ability to authorise payments with a single tap

It is not just the key to your phone. For most people, it is the master key to their cloud account.

On an iPhone, Apple confirms that someone with your passcode can attempt to change your Apple ID password directly from the device. On Android, the passcode opens a route to your Google account and everything connected to it: Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Pay. Additional protections can make this harder, but they only work if you have deliberately set them up, and even then they often rely on your passcode as a fallback if biometrics fail.

Here is what a thief can access after they get past your lock screen:

  • SMS messages and verification codes
  • Emails and password reset links
  • A route around the separate PIN or face scan on your banking app

A strong screen lock is the control that every other protection on your device depends on. How easy your code is to memorise at a glance, and what you can do about it, is what the next two topics are about.

Up next: not all screen lock methods offer the same level of protection, and one is dramatically weaker than it appears.
